Have you always wanted to do sketches on your tablet, but realized that nothing comes close to a paid app? If so, you should take note that Autodesk's SketchBook app is now a fully featured free app! The only binding element is creating an account with Autodesk. Even so, you can use the app free for seven days.

SketchBook is different because it provides the most commonly used features of drawing applications but in a very accessible form. For example, there is a simple system of layers that you can create and switch between in seconds. Each layer can be set a different blend mode, color balance, and HSL adjustment (for knowledgeable folk)

The app also features a vast selection of drawing tools, including various classic crayons, drawing pens, and inspired pattern brushes. You can edit the size and opacity for each brush, which raises the diversity of work tools nigh infinitely. Remember kids, a variety of painting tools is not the same as a diversity of colors that are mixed (even if they're original Copic™).

Speaking of kids, Autodesk has gone to great lengths to make the interface of SketchBook accessible to the young artist user base. Consequently, most functions are visible on screen, while others are no farther than the reach of a single tap or tap & hold.

But how well can you draw on a standard touchscreen? Drawing with fingers feels the same, no matter what tool you're supposed to be using. Being that there aren't many stylus users, it can get very tricky to draw a sharp line exactly where you want it to be. That's where the ruler and ellipse come in. If you are diligent enough, you can use these tools to create perfect sketches and, consequently works of art that can rival the works made with professional applications.
